Car insurance provider 1st Central has enlisted the help of Tom Puttick, who cleans some of Europe's most expensive supercars to give his top tips in a handy video.

Tom says: "There are some handy household products you can take on the ride to ensure if spillages happen, you can clean them up in no time.

"Baby wipes are the hero for so many parents – it's not just bums, but the seats they sit on that can be saved by these softies.

"I also swear by clean tea towels and bicarbonate of soda too. Not everyone is going to have a steam cleaner like I do".

As nearly a quarter of parents (23 per cent) claim they no longer regularly clean their cars, while a tenth admit they never clean it, help is at hand in the form of baby wipes, which according to Tom are just as essential as games and sat-nav for family car journeys.

Here are some sure fire ways to remove the most common stains.

Chocolate

Every parent's nightmare. Brush any loose chunks away and then grab any melty areas using wet wipes to absorb.

If there's a lot to get off, try using ice to freeze off the mess before wiping.

Milk

The smell of dried in spilt milk is enough to turn anyone's stomach. When it's still wet, try sprinkling baking powder over the area and allowing it to dry.
Afterwards, vacuum the entire area and allow the car to air to get rid of any remaining smell.

Yoghurt

A baby wipe will be your best bet here – but make sure to spray anti-bacterial spray on the spill area afterwards.

Ice-cream

Clear up any loose crumbs from cones or flakes before wiping up any further mess with a baby wipe. As with the milk or yoghurt spills, it's a good idea to make sure the spill is completely cleaned up and the car is aired to avoid any smell.

Sweet stains

Sticky and engrained sweets can be either frozen (as with chocolate) or melted off with hot water to remove the bulk.

To get rid of any remaining staining, try using a foaming shaving cream.

To get rid of any remaining staining, try using a foaming shaving cream.

Leave it to set on any marks for 10-15 minutes before wiping off with a solution of four parts vinegar one part water.

Make sure you don't use shaving gel - it doesn't have the same cleaning properties.

For sweets that contained any dreaded red colouring blot hydrogen peroxide onto the stain. Wait five minutes, and then blot again with the same solution as above – the stain should have disappeared.
